GatesAir Boosts IP Transport Capacity for Microwave STL Connections

Latest generation of Intraplex® HD Link™ integrates with IP Link codecs to expand channel counts, strengthen IP transport reliability across 950 MHz STL connections
Cincinnati, OH, September 28, 2015

GatesAir, a global leader in wireless, over-the-air content delivery solutions for radio and TV broadcasters, has significantly increased the IP transport capabilities of its Intraplex® HD Link™ STL system. The expanded capabilities as much as double IP data capacity to support higher channel counts and increase audio fidelity, while strengthened backup connectivity further enhances IP transport reliability.

Introduced in 2009, the Intraplex HD Link was the industry’s first digital STL to address HD Radio™, AM/FM and IP data transport over fixed 950 MHz STL connections, ensuring an out-of-the-box solution requiring no additional components. The new updated architecture leverages the advanced signal encoding of Intraplex IP Link to boost the HD Link’s ability to transport STL IP traffic, and adds built-in Intraplex SynchroCast® simulcasting technology for precise, GPS-locked digital timing. All traffic is prioritized over the robust, reliable HD Link connection, with the IP Link supplying robust backup delivery over the same 950 MHz STL link.

Using these technical innovations, radio broadcasters can now deliver up to 13 stereo channels across a 3 MB/s STL link using 192 Kb/s AAC compression; and further escalate audio channel carriage using advanced codecs like AAC-HE, AAC-HEv2 or Opus. The HD Link’s initial IP data capacity can be expanded from the previous apex of 1536 Kb/s to 2400, 2800 or 3200 Kb/s depending on the broadcaster’s channel count and audio fidelity needs as well as RF Link condition.

The combined strengths of the HD Link and IP Link bring additional benefits to the broadcaster. The HD Link remains the industry’s most powerful fixed 950 MHz STL, with 5 W of built-in amplification that eliminates the need for a separate power amplifier. Meanwhile, the network reliability and backup audio capabilities of IP Link ensure rock-solid connectivity for program Audio over IP, exporter-to-exciter transport of HD Radio content, and the transport of general user IP data. GatesAir’s Intraplex LiveLook application for intelligent network analytics can be added to monitor the health and status of STL links, giving broadcasters yet another tool to ensure the best possible network performance.

GatesAir will debut the latest generation of HD Link at The Radio Show, taking place September 30-October 2 at the Atlanta Marriot Marquis. GatesAir will exhibit at Booth 17.
