GatesAir Flexiva Portfolio Offers Cost-Effective HDRadio™ Upgrade Path

Lays foundation for transition to next-generation architecture, improving performance and reducing operating costs
Las Vegas, NV, April 06, 2014

(2014 NAB Show, Booth N609) — GatesAir, a global leader in over-the-air broadcast solutions for television and radio, today announced a new, innovative platform for radio broadcasters to accelerate the transition to Gen 4 Exgine, the next-generation architecture for multichannel HDRadio program transport and delivery. Unveiled at NAB, the enhanced Flexiva Gen 4 Exgine builds on GatesAir’s long legacy of innovation in HDRadio broadcasting that dates to the first IBOC tests in the 1990s.

“HDRadio broadcast models have reached a maturity level that demand more robust and customer-friendly solutions for deployment and operation,” said Rich Redmond, chief product officer, GatesAir. “Our end-to-end Gen 4 Exgine solution will help over-the-air broadcasters better support the new opportunities fourth-generation HDRadio systems offer, delivering a complete family of solutions across our Flexiva range to increase power levels, reduce operating costs and monetize services.”

The significant performance enhancements in the Gen 4 Exgine architecture are especially important for broadcasters facing the challenges associated with HDRadio power level increases. Though these FCC-approved increases pave the way for HDRadio signal coverage improvements that can reach more listeners and increase market share, they also create power utilization, bandwidth, noise and interference challenges that can affect efficiency, quality and compliance.

GatesAir incorporates previously external signal processing applications within its Flexiva™ transmitters for an all-in-one, customer-friendly solution that improves overall signal efficiency and precision. Benefits include additional transmitter headroom to accommodate higher HDRadio power levels, reduced signal distortion and no interference across adjacent broadcast stations.

“These enhancements help broadcasters deliver a robust signal while enjoying lowest total cost of ownership,” said Mr. Redmond. “Most importantly, Gen 4 Exgine helps ensure an enjoyable experience for listeners who appreciate the high-quality, multichannel experience that HDRadio provides. Fueled by our customer-first approach, these improvements will help broadcasters retain audiences and attract new listeners to increase market share and more effectively monetize their over-the-air digital services.”

Many of the Gen 4 Exgine features are built-in to the company’s next-generation Flexiva FAX exciters. Previously available for FM-only broadcasts, the new FAX exciters, to be introduced at NAB, incorporate advanced diagnostics to keep signals sharp and robust. Built-in diagnostics include real-time adaptive signal correction (RTAC) and HD Radio assymetrical sideband measurement. A fresh and innovative GUI helps ensure simple comprehension of these and other performance measurements.

The complete Gen 4 Exgine demonstration includes the industry’s most cost- and power-efficient transmitters across all FM, AM and HDRadio power levels. Flexiva transmitters incorporate GatesAir’s transformational PowerSmart® 3D technology to reduce footprint, improve performance and minimize maintenance — equating to lowest cost of ownership of any transmitter in the broadcast industry.
