GatesAir Simplifies On-Air Program Synchronization Across Transmitter Networks
Unique solution is industry’s first to incorporate precision-timed playout delay into IP codecs
Las Vegas, NV, April 06, 2014
(2014 NAB Show, Booth N609) — GatesAir, a global leader in over-the-air broadcast solutions for television and radio, breaks new ground in precision-timed on-air program delay with a lower-cost, customer-first solution that simplifies the architecture across single-frequency transmitter networks.
Single-frequency networks typically comprise many low-to-medium power transmitters across large regions to maximize signal coverage and advertising revenue. This GatesAir solution gives broadcasters a customer-friendly way to synchronize program content across multiple transmitter sites, using simple, cost-reducing 1RU solutions that reduce components, rack space requirements and overall system complexity. GatesAir incorporates its patented, transformational Intraplex® SynchroCast™ technology into its IP Link™ codecs, with direct connection to Flexiva™ FAX exciters at each transmitter location.
Using the innovative IP Link-to-FAX exciter transport architecture, SynchroCast is also the first solution that enables broadcasters to synchronize compressed and uncompressed audio across transmitter networks from the same platform. The ability to transport compressed audio across large transmitter networks in perfect synchronization sharply reduces bandwidth requirements and network costs, maximizing network-wide efficiency while maintaining signal delay down to the microsecond.
“IP has matured to the point where it has become the primary transport method of program content for many broadcasters, including those operating more complex network architectures,” said Rich Redmond, Chief Product Officer, GatesAir. “We’re addressing this trend by helping to ensure that broadcasters have transformational technologies and a robust, reliable platform that can be operated at much lower costs for virtually any network-based transport application, including synchronization of multi-site over-the-air content.”
The addition of SynchroCast to IP Link also enables broadcasters to synchronize compressed and uncompressed audio across transmitter networks from the same platform. The ability to transport compressed audio across large transmitter networks in perfect synchronization sharply reduces bandwidth requirements, maximizing network-wide efficiency while maintaining signal delay down to the microsecond.
Single-frequency network (SFN) operators can further benefit using the new IP Link Scheduler to manage content distribution across multiple transmitter sites. The new software application allows broadcasters to program and schedule playout events with simplicity, featuring an intuitive GUI to create down-to-the-second schedules:
- Automatic program switching between on-air network feeds across transmitter sites
- Bandwidth adjustments to increase network robustness during high-traffic time periods
- Automatic notifications following the conclusion of a specific event
For managing program feeds, the IP Link Scheduler can automatically identify incoming multicast streams, and seamlessly switch to the appropriate feed according to schedule. This is especially ideal for radio stations that require a more customer-friendly process for managing syndicated content coming from multiple sources — whether operating a single transmitter or a larger SFN.
