Harris PowerSmart® Initiative for TV Transmission Reaches New Heights at IBC

Company Slashes Rack-Space, Power Costs and Creates Other Efficiencies for Broadcasters who Share Transmission Facilities and Face Rising Bills
Denver, CO, August 14, 2012

Harris Broadcast Communications introduced its PowerSmart® concept four years ago for the purpose of increasing power density and efficiency, reducing operational costs and improving total cost of ownership for terrestrial TV broadcasters.

At IBC 2012 (September 7-11, RAI Exhibition Center, Amsterdam, Stand 7.G20), Harris extends its PowerSmart value proposition with new compact transmitter design options that are especially helpful to international broadcasters faced with minimal real estate and challenging budgets.

Harris is evolving its Maxiva™ UAX digital transmitters by integrating more power- and space-efficient technologies first introduced in its Maxiva UAX Compact Class brand — reducing the vertical footprint by 2RU. The reduced footprint also gives broadcasters operating large or small transmission networks more flexibility when deploying low-power transmitters in tight spaces across many locations.

These new designs, now shipping, are available for all Harris digital modulations (DVB-T2, DVB-T/H, ISDB-Tb, ATSC and others) from power levels of 300 W to 1250 W.

Harris also addresses real estate challenges for high-power broadcasters — many of whom share transmission facility space — by integrating band-pass filter systems into its Maxiva ULX high-power UHF transmitters.

Additionally, Maxiva ULX transmitters can now incorporate external liquid cooling pump systems into the transmitter cabinet, further reducing installation time and floor space requirements. This is an especially valuable feature in Europe and other regions where broadcasters in shared transmission facilities pay for the space occupied.

Visitors to the stand will also see Harris® Maxiva transmission solutions operating together with an integrated Harris DVB-T2 headend solution. The industry’s only complete DVB-T2 solution includes the Harris® Selenio™ media convergence platform for encoding/multiplexing, and the Harris® Videotek® MSA Series for signal monitoring and standards compliance. The Harris® Apex M2X™ software-definable exciter, capable of supporting global analog and DTV broadcast standards — including an upgrade path to DVB-T2-Lite — will also be demonstrated within the DVB-T2 headend solution.
