U.S. Trade and Development Agency Helps GatesAir Team Up with the Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority for Digital Television Transition

Arlington, VA – The U.S. Trade and Development Agency signed a grant with the Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority for a training program supporting the expansion and modernization of Ethiopia's nationwide broadcast television industry. The Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority is responsible for ensuring the expansion of broadcasting service that can contribute to the political, social and economic development of the country. Digital television transition (DTT) and media development is the focal area for the transition of the broadcast sector. The training is in partnership with GatesAir, Inc., an Ohio-based electronics company that produces and services over-the-air TV and radio broadcast equipment globally.

GatesAir Partners with Dielectric for Ethiopian DVB-T2 Transition Solutions

Dielectric, the antenna and RF system manufacturer, has teamed up with GatesAir in the deployment of a massive, turnkey solution for Ethiopia's nationwide DVB-T2 network. In the works for several years now, this second-generation digital TV transition project commenced shortly after GatesAir won the project back in May 2016. Dielectric has shipped $1.2 million of Powerlite™ antennas, filters, and related RF tech ahead of schedule.

The project encompasses updating 20 TV channels across "26 low-to-medium power UHF transmission sites positioned around the country," according to the August 22nd press release. "Dielectric worked closely with GatesAir, the prime contractor of the project who will design, supply, install, test and commission the network solution, to assure seamless integration with transmission systems at all sites."

Find Out Just How Ready You Are for the Repack

The grand majority of U.S. television stations -- and more than a few FM radio stations -- are following the FCC's 600MHz incentive auction very, very closely. Currently in progress, the auction's purpose is to help reallocate a large portion of the UHF spectrum from TV broadcast use toward mobile data use.

In the resulting repack of this UHF spectrum, hundreds of stations will be subject to channel shifts, shares, or shutdowns. Though these options are all voluntary, the first two could cost those broadcasters lots of time and money in planning, moving, updating, and other logistical considerations.

Protecting Your Valuable Investment

TV and Radio transmitters are often subject to harsh operating conditions. Although GatesAir transmitters are designed to withstand AC power line surges induced by lightning, or other sources, there can be occasions where the built-in protection is just not enough. With the Summer lightning season already upon us, now would be an excellent time to evaluate your transmitter protection.

We always recommend adding good quality AC line transient voltage protection ahead of the transmitter. There are a wide variety of technologies available and many manufacturers have vast experience in dealing with protecting broadcast equipment.

GatesAir Shapes Vision for an Over-the-Air Future at 2016 NAB Show

At the 2016 NAB Show, GatesAir continues its legacy of presenting educational thought leadership papers on trends and developments connected to over-the-air TV and radio broadcasting. It is just one of many ways that GatesAir Connects What's Next for broadcasters worldwide.

From Saturday through Tuesday, GatesAir executives and technologists will present nine papers as part of the Broadcast Engineering Conference. Topics include how the TV spectrum repack will affect both television and radio broadcasters, including RF plant preparations and an FCC spectrum auction update.
