GatesAir and Meditel Peru Relocate Four Broadcasters to New TV Channel Assignments
Turnkey projects upgrade each broadcaster’s transmission infrastructure with minimal service interruption while clearing the 700MHz band for mobile and broadband service providers
Cincinnati, OH, September 07, 2017
GatesAir’s leadership in next-generation, wireless over-the-air content delivery continues with several TV channel relocation projects in the country of Peru. Working closely with in-country partner Meditel Peru, GatesAir’s expertise in RF site planning and frequency-agile transmitter design played substantial roles in assuring seamless TV service transitions for four Peruvian broadcasters.
“As the 700MHz band offers several technical advantages for broadband internet services, the Government of Peru made the decision to allocate it to Peruvian Telecoms for the purpose of improving 4G LTE coverage in both rural and urban areas,” said Bruce D. Swail, GatesAir CEO. “As we are demonstrating in the current U.S. spectrum repack, we have a wealth of experience in moving TV broadcasters to new channel assignments. Working with Meditel Peru, we leveraged that expertise to ensure that these affected broadcasters quickly returned to providing over-the-air services from their new UHF channels.”
While clearing the 700MHz was focused on helping Telecoms and their customers, Peru’s Ministry of Transportation and Communications—the Government body responsible for the control and supervision of communications services in over-the-air spectrum—rewarded these broadcasters with grants to purchase new transmission systems. All were upgraded to high-efficiency Maxiva™ liquid-cooled or air-cooled systems based on environmental conditions across power, regional climate and other operational factors.
“GatesAir’s proven ability to quickly manufacture and deliver transmitters to support new channel assignments made them the ideal choice for our customers, along with the Maxiva brand’s exceptional performance and unparalleled high-efficiency benefits that reduce footprint, energy use and maintenance,” said Bernardo Vértiz, commercial manager, Meditel Peru.
All four channel relocation projects have been successfully completed, with each broadcaster now operating on their new frequencies:
- Caracol Comunicaciones S.A.C.: Previously operating on Channel 51 as Exitosa TV, this broadcaster migrated to Channel 29. This new channel assignment transitioned the broadcaster from spectrum immediately adjacent to the 700MHz band (692-698MHz) to 560-566MHz. The station installed a GatesAir ULXT transmitter broadcasting at 9000 W from Morro Solar, Chorrillos in Lima, relying on the ULXT’s liquid-cooled architecture to significantly reduce cooling loads and related energy costs.
- Empresa Radiodifusora Virgen de Copacabana E.I.R.L: Previously operating on Channel 55 (716-722MHz), this broadcaster migrated to Channel 33 (584-590 MHz). Broadcasting from Santa Cruz hill, Juliaca in Puno (3,825masl) at a lower power level of 1500 W, the station installed a GatesAir UAX air-cooled transmitter outfitted with dual, redundant GatesAir exciters capable of in-field migration to support digital TV services.
- Empresa Interamericana de Radiodifusion S.A.: Previously operating on Channel 55 (716-722MHz), this broadcaster migrated to Channel 17 (488-494MHz). Broadcasting from the University San Martin de Porres North Branch, Chiclayo in Lambayeque at 1500 W, this station also installed a GatesAir UAX air-cooled transmitter outfitted with dual, redundant GatesAir exciters capable of in-field migration to support digital TV services.
- Cibermedios Producciones S.C.R.L.: Previously operating on Channel 53 (704-710MHz), this broadcaster migrated to Channel 41 (632-638 MHz). Broadcasting from Quiritimayo hill in Cajamarca at 3000 W, the station installed a GatesAir UAX air-cooled transmitter with a software-defined exciter adaptable for future DTV services.
